How to Reset Root Password

Lost access to your server? You can reset your root or administrator password directly from the HostCraft dashboard without data loss.

Linux Root Password

  1. Log in to your HostCraft Dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Services > My Services and select your VPS.
  3. Click on the Settings tab and look for "Change Password".
  4. Enter your new secure password (min. 12 characters).
  5. Click Save Changes.
  6. Important: You must Reboot your VPS for the change to take effect.

Note

This method works for KVM virtualization. If you are using an LXC container, the change is instant and does not require a reboot.

Windows Administrator Password

For Windows Servers, the process uses the QEMU Guest Agent:

  1. Ensure the VPS is Running.
  2. Go to the Settings tab in your dashboard.
  3. Select "Set Administrator Password".
  4. Enter the new password and confirm.

If the password does not change, try restarting the VPS and attempting the change again immediately after boot.

Troubleshooting

If the automated tool fails:

  • Use the VNC Console (available in the dashboard) to log in manually.
  • Boot into Rescue Mode to mount the disk and edit the shadow file manually (Advanced users).
  • Open a support ticket for assistance.
