Benchmarking AMD EPYC 9354 Genoa vs. Intel Xeon

A comprehensive breakdown of random 4K IOPS, compilation speeds, and single-thread gaming tick stability across our Mumbai node clusters.

Executive Summary: AMD EPYC 9354 Genoa delivered 2.4x higher memory bandwidth (12-channel DDR5-4800) and sustained 32% lower virtualization overhead under heavy PostgreSQL query loads compared to prior-generation Xeon platforms.

1. Test Node Specifications

We compared two identically-configured 2U rack chassis deployed in our Mumbai (Chandivali) Tier-4 facility:

  • Node A (EPYC Genoa): 1x AMD EPYC 9354 (32C/64T, 3.25GHz base, 3.80GHz boost), 128 GB DDR5 ECC 4800MHz, 2x 1.92TB Samsung Enterprise PCIe 4.0 NVMe.
  • Node B (Intel Xeon): 2x Intel Xeon Silver 4314 (32C/64T total, 2.40GHz base, 3.40GHz boost), 128 GB DDR4 ECC 3200MHz, 2x 1.92TB Enterprise NVMe.

2. Random 4K Read/Write Throughput

Using fio with 32 direct threads and 64 queue depth on raw hardware partitions, the DDR5 bus and Gen4 controller yielded over 820,000 sustained read IOPS with sub-millisecond p99 latencies.

3. Single-Core Stability for High-Tick Applications

For game servers and Redis in-memory caches, memory latency and L3 Infinity Cache access speeds provided flat 20.0 TPS frame times with zero micro-stuttering.
